The 14th City FC National Summer Athletics Championship will begin from tomorrow while 24 affiliated sports associations, services teams and the educational institutions will take part in the two-day national meet.
The organisers of Bangladesh Athletics Federation (BAF) stated this in a press conference at Bangabandhu National Stadium conference room in the capital yesterday. They said that the BAF is expecting 500 athletes including men and women from 64 districts and eight divisional sports associations, Universities, education boards, all the physical education colleges, services teams and BKSP to contest in the men’s 22 events and 14 women’s events in the 14th edition of the meet.
BAF General Secretary Abdur Rokib Montu said that this season they requested Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Pratisthan (BKSP) to send their athletes in this senior meet while the BKSP used to participate in the junior meet only and always keep clear dominance. The events of the meet will start from early hour (5am) of July 27 with marathon and thereafter all the qualification competitions will be completed in first session of the day and the 100 meters final will be held following the official opening ceremony at 4pm.
“This time we are expecting a competitive and an attractive competition and I am very much hopeful about the timing of the sprinters, as the athletes had the opportunity to take part in the different international meets for good timing, so they will try for good timing to earn the qualification to take part in the international contests.”
But the joint secretary of the BAF Kitab Ali said that they are not expecting anything outstanding but he was hopeful some exciting results in the national championship to be held in December and Bangladesh have no chance to win gold medal in the SA Games to be held next year in Nepal.
Meanwhile, City FC Limited, a football based club came forward to sponsor the national summer athletics.
Shamsuzzoha Khan, general secretary of the City FC said that their main object is to set up a football academy and after collection talent from across the country will run a long term camp under two coaches from Ukraine.
Kitab Ali, who is also an adviser of the City FC said that they will have a talent hunting programme to collect 720 under 12 booters from that 40 players will be selected for the camp when he expect that from this program they will also have future athletes.
ASM Ali Kabir, president of the BAF also addressed media conference. State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder will be the chief guest in the opening ceremony while Bangladesh Awami League Youth and Sports secretary Harunur Rashid and SM Shahadat Sohel managing Director of the City FC will attend as special guests.
