Derogatory comment on ICT

Jamaat leader sent to jail

Staff Reporter

The International Crimes Tribunal yesterday sent Jamaat-e-Islami ex-lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad to central jail in connection with a case filed against him for making derogatory comments about the tribunal.

Azad, who was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for contempt of court in 2013, surrendered before the ICT bench headed by Justice Md Shahinur Rahman and sought bail in the case, but the tribunal sent him to jail after rejecting his bail prayer.

Prosecutor Advocate Tapash Kanti Baul, told reporters that the ICT sent Jamaat leader to jail after rejecting his bail petition.

International Crimes Tribunal-2 on June 9, 2013 , who was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for contempt of court in 2013, sentenced Hamidur Rahman and the then acting secretary general of Jamaat Rafiqul Islam Khan to three months' imprisonment and fined each of them Tk 3,000 for the contempt of court.

The court also sentenced Selim Uddin, arrested assistant secretary general of Jamaat Dhaka city unit, to simple imprisonment and fined him Tk 1,000.

It all began on February 4 in 2013, a day before the tribunal delivered the verdict against Jamaat leader Quader Mollah. Jamaat leaders Selim and Azad at a Jamaat rally in Motijheel made derogatory and provocative comments about the tribunals and ongoing trials there. Later in the day, Rafiqul joined and issued a press release with similar comments about the tribunal and its cases.

On February 7, the tribunal asked the trio to explain as to why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them for their comments.

The court had issued the notice on its own following reports published in various national dailies on February 5.

On March 6, the court ordered the police to arrest the Jamaat leaders and produce them before the court for “deliberately avoiding” appearance before the tribunal in connection with the contempt of court ruling.

Selim was arrested but the police claimed that Rafiqul and Azad were on the run.

On June 2, Selim apologised unconditionally before the tribunal.

Lawyer Abdus Sobahan Tarafdar and Mujahidul Islam Shahin moved for the Jamaat leader in the court.
