This year, celebrated Bangladeshi singer Runa Laila, a living legend of the music world, will be awarded with ‘Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal 2018’. Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman will hand over the award to the popular singer at a function at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of DU on July 30. An award made with two bhori gold and one lakh taka will be given to Runa Laila at the event.

Besides, a student of BA Honours from the music department of DU with highest CGPA will also receive a gold medal under the same initiative. This medal will be handed over at the convocation of DU.

To keep alive the memory of late veteran Nazrul Sangeet artiste Feroza Begum and her works, ‘Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal 2018’ was introduced at Dhaka University in 2016. Since then, an eminent singer and the most meritorious student from DU’s music department have been awarded every year.

Born on July 28 in 1930 in Gopalganj to the zamindars of Ratail Ghonaparha, Feroza Begum was guided by two true mentors, her father Khan Bahadur Mohammad Ismail, a famous lawyer and her mother Kaokabunnesa Begum, a true promoter of music with a sweet voice.

Feroza Begum, for her outstanding contribution to Nazrul Sangeet, received numerous awards in her lifetime, including Independence Award, Ekushey Award, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Award, Nasiruddin Gold Award, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Gold Award, Nazrul Sangeet Artist Award, Nazrul Academy Award, Churulia Gold Award and D. Litt from Bardhaman University.

Feroza Begum died on September 9 in 2014.
