Forest official suspended over smuggling Sundarbans trees
Bagerhat: The Department of Forest on Tuesday suspended an official for his alleged involvement in tree smuggling from the Sundarbans, reports UNB.
The punitive action was taken against Shahadat Hossain, in-charge of Marapashur Patrol Camp.
Mahmudul Hasan, divisional forest officer of the Sundarbans East Zone, said there was an allegation that 1,450 cft of Sundari timber were smuggled from the Sundarbans on July 13.
Later, the authorities concerned formed a probe body to look into the matter where they found Shahadat to be guilty.
During investigation, the probe body found 86 Sundari trees were felled.
Contacted, Shahadat said he has no idea about the smuggling of trees and he has not received any suspension order yet.
14 return after serving in Indian jail

Fourteen Bangladeshi nationals returned home on Tuesday after serving two years in an Indian jail.
Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Benapole Immigration Police, said the returnees entered the Indian territory without valid documents three years ago in search of better job.
They were arrested by Indian police from Bangalore. Later, an Indian court sentenced them to two years’ imprisonment for illegally crossing the border.
On completion of the jail term, the Bangladeshi nationals returned home through the Beanpole check-post.
The returnees are hailing from Rajshahi, said the OC.
Teenager held for ‘rape attempt’
Bogura: Police on Tuesday arrested a teenage boy for allegedly trying to rape a Class-IV girl at Borachapra village in Dupchanchia upazila, reports UNB.
The arrest was made after a case was filed over the incident that took place on July 14.
According to the case statement, the 16-year-old boy entered the house of the girl, his neighbour, in the morning of the day while her parents were outside. He swooped on the girl and tried to rape her.
Hearing the screams of the girl, neighbours rushed in and save her while the boy managed to flee.
Officer-in-charge of Dupchanchia Police Station Abdur Razzak said the arrestee was produced before a court.
Man killed in Kurigram road crash
Kurigram: A man was killed when a truck hit his motorcycle at Matherpar in Ulipur upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Mithu Roy, 32, a polling agent of the ongoing by-election to Kurigram-3 constancy.
The accident took place around 6 am when a truck hit the motorbike carrying Mithu while he was heading towards Narikelbaria Government Primary School for performing duty, leaving him dead on the spot, said Mizanur Rahman, sub-inspector of Ulipur Police Station.
37 arrested in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR: Law enforcers, in special drives arrested 37 persons including 13 drug traders and three activists of Jamaat-E-Islami from different areas of the district in last 12-hour ending at 8am yesterday morning, reports BSS.
Law enforcers also seized 204 bottles of Phensidyl and 500 pieces of Yaba tablets during the drives.
Police said they were picked up from different areas of the district on different charges.
During the drives, Dinajpur Sadar police arrested 12 persons including seven drug traders with 500 pieces of Yaba tablets, Biral Thana police arrested three drug traders with 52 bottles of Phensidyl, Birganj Thana police arrested four persons including two activists of Jamaat-E-Islami, Nawabganj Thana police arrested one person, Chirirbandar Thana police arrested three persons, Bochaganj Thana police arrested five persons including an activist of Jamaat-E-Islami, Kaharole Thana police arrested two persons, Hakimpur Thana police arrested one person and Khansama Thana police arrested three persons.
