Two found dead in Gaibandha   

Gaibandha: Police recovered the bodies of a man and an auto-rickshaw driver from Sadullapur and Polashbari upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.

Borhan Uddin, officer-in-charge of Sadullapur Police Station, said locals spotted the bullet-riddle body of an unidentified man at Bhatgram Pocharbazar Hatikan village and informed it to police.

Later, police recovered the body.

Meanwhile, police recovered the body of auto-rickshaw driver Bakul Miah from Paschim Nayanpur area of the upazila in the morning, said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Polashbari Police Station.

The legs and hands of the victim were tie-up with ropes, he added.

Hot spell disrupts normal life

A continuous hot spell is disrupting normal life in Noakhali as everywhere in the country.

When contacted, the Maijdee weather observation office told The Independent that the highest temperature was  recorded to be around 36 .5 degrees Celsius yesterday.

The Met Office, however, could not assure of any immediate respite from the current situation.

Meghna river basin areas here are the worst affected by the heat spell. A heat wave is blowing over the region all day long. The plight has been aggravated by regular power cuts.

Ajahar, a resident of Chomuhani, said yesterday that locals had never seen such heat waves in the last month of the Bengali month Aashar. As a result, they are facing a setback while working in crop fields amid this unbearable weather condition, he added.

Another trader, Imrul, said low–income people, mostly daily labourers, are working under a blazing sun in the open.

According to sources in the Noakhali General Hospital, children and old people are the worst affected due to the heat spell sweeping across the country. In char areas, most of the tube-wells and ponds have dried up in the area.

Road crash kills 2 mango traders

CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Two mango traders were killed as their motorcycle skidded off the road in Dhoppukur area under Shibganj upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon, reports BSS.

The deceased were identified as Mukul, 30, son of Enamul Haque of Chakkirti and Bahadur, 32, son of Mokbul Hossain of Krisnachadrapur both under Shibganj upazila of the district.

Police said the accident occurred when the motorbike skidded off the road in the area at about 1.30 pm as its rider lost control over the bike, leaving its two riders dead on the spot.

They were mango traders and were going to a mango orchard at Sonamasjid area from Kansat.

Three-day fish fair concludes

A three-day long fish fair was concluded at District Fisheries Office premises in the town yesterday.

Fisheries Department arranged the fish fair to mark the National Fisheries Week.

A total of seven stalls including live fishes, fish feed and hatchery were set up in the fair.

Fish cultivators, hatchery owners and fish feed producers took part in the fair. A large number of people visited the fair. District Fisheries Officer (In-charge) Momotazunnesa inaugurated the fish fair as the chief guest on Friday.

Foundation stone of police investigation centre laid

.CHAPAINAWABGANJ: The foundation stone of police investigation centre has been laid at Islampur union in Chapainawabganj sadar upazila on Saturday afternoon, reports BSS.

Superintendent of Police (SP) TM Mojahidul Islam laid the foundation stone of the three storied building as the chief guest.

District Convener of Community Policing Forum Md. Ruhul Amin, its Secretary Samiul Hoque Liton and Additional Superintendent of Police Iqbal Hossain were present on the occasion.

Public works department (PWD) is constructing the building at a cost of Tk. 3, 10, 00,000.
