Shrimps in eight farming blocks were poisoned at Kumri village in Lohagara upazila of the district yesterday causing losses to about Tk15 million. Farm owners Shafiqul Islam Babu and Khaeruzzaman said shrimps of the enclosures on 45 bighas of land have been poisoned causing losses to about one and a half crores taka. “Yesterday afternoon, we found dead shrimps floating there. Men of Palash chairman have done this mischief,” one said.
On August 24, one Ilias Ali, 60, of the village was shot dead by the rival group. On August 26, brother of the deceased Hedayet Ali filed a murder case accusing 50 in this connection. Villagers said ever since the murder took place both the groups have been engaged in looting houses, cattle, fish and cutting down young plants indiscriminately, even poisoning fish of the fish enclosures.
