The High Court yesterday directed former state minister for energy AKM Mosharraf Hossain to surrender before a lower court within 50 days in connection with Barapukuria coal mine case.
After hearing on a rule, the HC bench comprising Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice ASM Mujibur Rahman came up with the order paving the way for the trial court to resume the trial proceedings in the case against him.
The HC also vacated its earlier order that had stayed the trial proceedings.
On 26 February 2008, the ACC filed the Barapukuria coalmine graft case against 16 people, including AKM Mosharraf Hossain.
According to the case statement, the government incurred a loss of Tk 1.59 million on the Barapukuria coalmine deal for the then government’s irregularity in it.
Later, in response to a petition filed by AKM Mosharraf Hossain, the HC had stayed the trial proceedings against him and issued a rule asking the government to explain why the trial proceedings against petitioner should not be scrapped.
