The officer-in-charge of Jatrabari police station, Oboni Shankar Kor, has allegedly said to have suggested to a snatching victim to reach a compromise with the snatchers.
After getting a written complaint, the home ministry has asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to look into the matter.
According to reliable sources, after a snatching incident in the Jatrabari area on June 24, the OC allegedly pressured the victim to reach a compromise with the snatchers. When the victim refused, the police officer allegedly said: "I will ask the snatcher to beat you up, and accuse you in several cases and send you to jail."
Scared, the victim complained to the prime minister, home secretary, and inspector general of police. On August 27, a letter from the home ministry, signed by senior assistant secretary Kadeza Tahera Boby, informed him about the decision. The Independent has obtained a copy of the complaint and the letter of the home ministry.
According to the complaint, Momin went to Jatrabari police station after his camera and Tk. 2,000 in cash were snatched. This happened when he arrived in Suthikhalpar area from Uttar Jatrabari Bibir Bagicha around 8:00pm on June 24. Four armed men and a woman took part in the snatching. They also told him to get Tk. 10,000 from his relatives through mobile banking. After the incident, he tried to contact the OC on his official number. As he did not answer the call, he rang up the Deputy Police Commissioner of Wari Zone. Moments later, sub-inspector Azam reached the spot and rescued him.
Momin was taken to the police station. But when he met the OC, he told him to compromise with the snatchers. But as Momin refused, the OC became angry. "I was told to accompany him and, with another police officer, we visited the spot. There he spoke to members of the snatchers gang," Momin said in his complaint.
He was again taken to the police station and was tortured and forced to make a statement as directed by the OC. His statement was recorded on a video camera. Momin sent an SMS to the DC of Wari informing him about the mater. On June 28, he complained to the home secretary and other senior police officers.
When contacted, OC Oboni denied the allegation. "Some persons with vested interests are carrying out propaganda against me", he claimed.
