All major rivers that ravaged the country’s northern region have fallen below their danger levels. The floods, the worst since 1988 and 1998, affected 12 districts over a period of nearly a month.
Only flood waters remain in certain areas. But that too are receding with the rivers falling, Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, an official at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) told The Independent yesterday.
The last to fall much below its danger level was Jamuna on Saturday, after causing havoc in Kurigram, Sirajganj and Bogra affecting over half a million people and damaging vast areas of crop fields, mostly transplanted aman that constitutes one of the major cereals of the country and vegetables.
As the Jamuna fell, it did not stop being one of the world's most devastating rivers, gnawing at everything on its path of retreat causing severe erosion. This is creating a new problem, besides water-borne diseases and lack of fodder for their cattle. On their return home, they are seeing their flood-damaged homes being eroded along with croplands, reports from Kurigram, Sirajganj and Bogra said. These three districts bore the brunt of Jamuna’s fury.
The flood waters that are still there in pockets at Munshiganj, Manikganj Shariatpur, Rajbari and Madaripur, where the Padma too unleashed its fury like the Jamuna, would recede as the major rivers would continue to fall for another four days, the FFWC said yesterday.
The floods are finally over for this year after four spells — in June, July, August and September — with heavy rain both in the up and down streams, Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan added.
