Brief rain brings little relief

Special Correspondent

A little rain in different parts of the city and elsewhere in the country yesterday  brought a little relief among people, who went through mild heat wave conditions on Thursday that saw the mercury rising to 37.6 degrees Celsius in Dhaka and 39 C in the northern town of Rajarhat.

Good rain is expected today (Saturday) and on Sunday that would end the sultry weather, Arif Hossain, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office, told The Independent yesterday.

Although the rainfall was not very heavy yesterday, it brought some relief. While it rained hard in one part of Mirpur, it was nearly dry at nearby Agargaon, where the met office measures the amount of rainfall.

Reports said there were good showers on the south-eastern outskirts of Dhaka city at Narsinghdi, Rupganj and Purbachal.

Arif Hossain said the rain may slowly increase from today.

The maximum temperature in Dhaka yesterday was

35.8C and the country’s highest maximum temperature of 39.1C was recorded at Syedpur. Only 3mm of rainfall was recorded at the Agargaon met office.

People of Rangpur, Bogra and Chandpur were going through the heat and humidity. But their agonies would be over from Saturday, as more rainfall is expected.

Thursday’s culprit for the sudden heat wave without rain was the brewing of a low pressure area in the north Bay that sucked the moisture from the air depriving the rain to gel.

The highest temperature of 39C at Rajarhat on Thursday comes after April 22, 2014 when the mercury rose to 40.2C.
