Holy Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of Muslims, will be celebrated across the country on September 25 as the new moon of the Arabic month of Zilhajj was not sighted in Bangladesh sky yesterday, reports UNB.
The National Moon Sighting Committee took the decision at a meeting after reviewing reports received from different parts of the country, said Director General of the Islamic Foundation Shamim Mohammad Afzal.
He was addressing a press briefing at the meeting room of the Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram in the evening. The Islamic lunar calendar depends on sightings of the moon – a practice which can at times prove difficult.
Eid-ul-Azha is the second of two religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year.
It honours the willingness of prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his promised son, Ishmael, as an act of submission to God's command, before God then intervened, through his angel Jibra'il and informs him that his sacrifice has already been accepted.
