For want of a link road between Teprigang haat in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh district and Mirzaganj haat in Domar upazila of Nilphamari district, the common people, including traders, have to travel by a circuitous route covering 25 km.
A direct road would cut the distance down to only seven km.
At present, people are going to these haats via Domar upazila town and Debiganj upazila town. Other routes are via the Chilahati border town in Domar upazila and the Bhoulaganj border haat under Debiganj upazila.
Not long back, a big Indian enclave used to lie between these two haats, making the construction of a direct road to connect them impossible. However, the Indian enclave has been transferred to Bangladesh following an agreement between the two countries. This has removed the obstacle to road construction.
Domar upazila engineer Md Abdur Rouf told this correspondent said the existence of the Indian enclave had come in the way of building a direct road between the two haats.
He also said a link road between the two haats could now be built.
Md Abul Hasan Mia, chairman of Jorabari union under Domar upazila, and Md Golam Rahman, chairman of Tepriganj union under Debiganj upazila, told The Independent that the prospect of constructing a link road between the two haats had brightened as the Indian enclave had ceased to exist.
Locals said a direct road between these two haats would increase their importance manifold as it would reduce the distance by at least 18 km. So, they appealed to the higher authorities for the construction of a direct road as early as possible. Some traders of the two haats engaged in various types of business, including paddy and jute, demanded that the government money be sanctioned to build a seven-km-long road linking the two haats.
The chairman of Domar upazila parishad, Md Abdur Razzaque Bosonia, said a direct road between the two famous haats should be constructed very soon for the sake of the local businessmen and common people.
