It was another hot and humid day yesterday (Wednesday), with the maximum temperature rising to 34.7 degrees Celsius. People were desperately seeking a little shade and cool in the concrete jungle.
A blazing sun in a clear sky made the situation worse. Moisture, brought by south-easterly air from the Bay, increased humidity, meteorologists said.
The temperature rose by 2.7C from Tuesday's 32C in Dhaka, making life difficult for the residents. The heat also helped the city’s ubiquitous rickshaw-peddlers raise their fares. Green coconut sellers and street-side sherbet and ice-cream vendors made a good profit with the rise in prices.
The number of people seeking treatment for diarrhoea in city hospitals has risen. ICDDRB sources reported that patients arriving there fell ill mostly because of unsafe drinking water and intake of stale food and fruits from street-side vendors.
Mizanur Rahman, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office, said rain is likely later in the day. It may gradually increase from Sunday and Monday. The intensity would be more from Tuesday and continue for the next two days.
The heat in the city yesterday rose despite light rain totalling 24mm until 6am.
Same was the situation in the north-eastern city of Sylhet, which experienced the country’s highest maximum temperature of 36.5C that rose from Tuesday's 35C. The high temperature there added to the inconvenience of poll campaigners. The forecast for the next 24 hours till 6pm today (Thursday) said there are chances of light to moderate rain/thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds at a few places in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with moderately heavy falls at places.
