At least 4,766 students who applied for college admission in the fourth phase through online applications have not been selected for any college.
Sources in the Inter-Education Board Coordination Sub-Committee say a total of 141,221 students had applied for college admission.
Among them, 136,455 have been selected, according to the result published on Tuesday night.
The sources also say that no decision has been taken about those students who have not been selected for any college. Among them are applicants who passed the secondary school certificate (SSC) examinations with GPA-5. A decision may be taken regarding these students after completion of the admission process on 26 July.
Students who had not applied for college admission in the third phase were given a last chance for admission. The fourth phase of the application process started on July 10 and ended on July 15. The results were published at 8pm on Tuesday.
Those students who have been selected for college admission will now confirm their choice of the educational institutions from the options before them. Students not confirming their selected college through SMS accompanied by a fee would have their applications cancelled.
After the selection, the students will get three days for college admission, starting from July 21. After the admission, the authorities of colleges will inform the respective education boards on July 25–26 about the number of students taking admission to their institutions.
“It’s a matter of grief that some students have not been selected by any college. If the number of vacant seats is limited in a college and more students apply for those seats, the software will only select the eligible students for the vacant seats and the rest will be dropped,” Prof. Harun Or Rashid, college inspector of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, said yesterday.
He also said there were many vacant seats in the colleges and all students would get an opportunity for admission. He further said the matter would be decided later.
“Moreover, many students who have been selected will not confirm their colleges because their selected institutions are out of their choice. As a result, the number of students without admission will increase,” he added.
He said the education ministry would eventually decide whether those students would get another chance for admission.
Inter-Education Board Coordination Sub-Committee sources said over 3.50 lakh students out of a total number of students passing the SSC and equivalent exams did not come under the process of admission. This year, 1,493,187 students passed the SSC and equivalent exams under 10 education boards.
