Steps to be taken for development of Rokeya Smriti Kendra: Noor

RANGPUR: Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor has said all necessary steps will be taken for a proper development of Begum Rokeya Smriti Kendra (BRSK) located at village Pairaband in Mithapukur upazila of the district, reports BSS.

“Essential steps will also be taken to stop shutting down development of BRSK and continuation of the process even after expiry of tenure of the present government,” Noor said while addressing a views-exchange meeting held at BRSK on Tuesday afternoon as the chief guest.

Earlier, the minister visited the whole BRSK compound with high officials of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangla Academy and the local administration.

The minister said sincere cooperation of all concerned people was always crucial for any development and the local people should come forward for continuous progress of BRSK.

With acting president of Bangla Academy Mohammed Anwar Hossain in the chair, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Public Administration HN Ashiqur Rahman, Secretary to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Nasir Uddin Ahmed, executive member of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Rehana Ashiqur Rahman attended the meeting as special guests.

Deputy director of BRSK Abdullah Al Faruk, associate professor of the Department of Bengali of Begum Rokeya University Dr Tuhin Wadud, associate professor of Kawnia Degree College Dr Swasswato Bhattacharya, Mithapukur Upazila Awami League President Mozammel Haque Mintu, Pairaband Union Parishad Chairman Foyzar Rahman Khan, Begum Rokeya’s niece Ranjina Begum, president of Begum Rokeya Smriti Sangshad Raju Ahmed and its General Secretary Rafikul Islam Dulal, among others, addressed.

Man lynched in Jashore

A man was killed in a lynch-mob attack after he allegedly raped and killed a septuagenarian woman at Jagannathpur village in Sadar upazila on Monday.

The deceased is Iradat Khan, 40, son of Habib Khan of the village.

Sub-inspector of Basundia police outpost Hayat Mahmud said Iradat called his neighbour Meherunnesa, 70, to his house on Monday noon for cooking rice for him as his parents went to Faridpur to attend the marriage ceremony of a relative.

Failing to find the elderly woman till the afternoon, locals started quizzing Iradat about her but he replied incoherently, raising their suspicion. At one stage, the angry mob started beating Iradat when he confessed to killing the woman after rape. After the killing, he kept the body of the victim in a plastic sack in his kitchen. Later, locals informed police of the matter who recovered the body in the evening.

In the meantime, the angry mob gave Iradat a good thrashing, leaving him injured. Police rescued him and took him to Jashore General Hospital around 10:30pm where doctors declared him dead.

Iradat was arrested for killing a Class-V girl of the area after rape barely a year back. He was recently released from jail on bail.

Man killed in Manikganj road crash

A shopkeeper was killed as a truck ran over him on Manikganj-Singair road atBymileBus Stand in Singair upazila yesterday.

Hashmat Ali Mallik, 37, a grocery shop owner was killed when a stone-laden truck hit him while crossing the road around 5:30 am, police said.

On information, police seized the truck but could not arrest anyone.

National Fisheries Week begins

National Fisheries week began here today with a view to increase fish production.

District Fisheries Officer (In-charge) Momotazunnesa inaugurated the week through a press conference at her office and informed the newsmen about the different aspects of the programme.

She said the government implemented various development programmes included setting up Beel nursery in open water bodies, imparting training to fish cultivators and extension of fish cultivation technology to increase fish production.
