Chorki: A new Bangladeshi search engine
Chorki, a Bangladeshi search engine, is a business-focused search engine, especially for local e-commerce, which incorporates local psychology, culture, and lifestyle in its platform. Launched in May this year, startup Chorkis mission is to create a search engine for Bangladeshi people and content. Chorki wants to help local entrepreneurs to start and promote their businesses online. The biggest difference between Chorki and existing search engines such as Google isChorki wants to remain a business-focused search engine.
As of 2014, Google held 88.2 per cent of the global search market. On the context, Zahidul Amin, CEO And co-founder of Chorki.com said, Chorki is a search engine for Bangladeshi local content. One can search anything in Bangla and get immediate results. We are trying to make search more locally oriented and culturally accessible.
Recently, Chorki has launched a new feature, called food and restaurant search, to let users search for local food items and restaurants. Users can also search for local news, products, places, jobs, etc. Chorki team believes, e-commerce is going to be huge in Bangladesh; thats why, the team is also working on an e-commerce platform called Chorki e-shop.
So far, Chorki has raised fund from a Malaysian VC firm and Mind Initiative. Currently, the startup has 19 employees, who are extremely dedicated and skilled. Just like Baidu, which accounts for 83 per cent of search engine market share in China, Chorki wants to be the leading search engine that can understand the Bangladeshi culture, psychology, and lifestyle, and offer solid results.
