Jarina Begum, a farmer of fulgacha village and wife of a van puller, is  much worried about her daughter’s educational expenses as heavy rains have damaged her vegetables.
She had cultivated vegetables on 18 decimals of land near her homestead spending Tk 5,000. Her only daughter is now studying at the Carmichael College. As Jarina has lost vegetables in the field she is now thinking about how to manage her daughter’s educational expenses.  Like Jarina several thousand other vegetable growers across the district have suffered losses as repeated heavy rains have damaged their seed beds and vegetables.
Aiming to recoup the losses the farmers were preparing their lands to cultivate early variety of winter vegetables. Many of them had sowed seeds of various vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, radish, aubergine, tomato and others.
But their efforts suffered a setback due to damage of seed beds by incessant rains during the last few days.
The growers have again sowed seeds to cultivate the vegetables in the hope of earning good profit as the  early variety of vegetables have great demand and are sold at high prices.  But the farmers remain frustrated by repeated destruction of vegetables and seed beds by rains and inundation of land.
Abdul Malek a farmer of Bangram village in sadar upazila, said he had cultivated aubergine on 30 decimals of land. But rain water damaged the whole plantation. While another farmer Jaharul Haque said he prepared seed beds twice spending Tk 5,000; but the rain has damaged everything. This has led to short supply of vegetables pushing up their prices in the markets. Growers said this year, the price of vegetables will be higher as many of them have failed to cultivate early varieties.
According to the Department of Agricultural and Extension (DAE), this year, 4,840 hectares of land has been brought under vegetable farming in five upazilas of the district.
Deputy Director of DAE in Lalmonirhat said some areas of district are suitable for vegetable farming. Many of them have become self-reliant through vegetables farming. But this year, farmers have been affected by heavy rain. “We have prepared a list of affected farmers and send it to the higher authorities. If the government gives any fund the affected farmers will be benefited,” he added.
