8 clinics sealed off in Moheshpur

6 women died of wrong treatment in a month

A mobile court sealed off five private clinics in Moheshpur upazila on Monday over allegation of wrong treatment, poor service and unhygienic environment.
The action came following death of at least eight pregnant women in the past one month due to alleged wrong treatment.
Executive Magistrate Uttam Kumar, who led the mobile court, sealed off Sima Clinic, Oishi Clinic in Moheshpur town, Karnafuli Private Clinic in Gurdah Bazaar, Kohinur Private Clinic in Nepa bazaar and Pearless Hospital in same area.
The magistrate said there were no fulltime doctor and nurse in any of those clinics.
Besides, the clinics were providing very poor services in  unhygienic environment.
During drives on 10 September, Sumon and Shuvo Clinics in Moheshpur town were sealed off and machines and documents seized.
On 27 August, Jonony Clinic and Nursing Home in Bhoirab bazaar of the upazila were closed down during similar drive.
Senior gynecologist of Jhenidah Sadar Hospital Dr Emdad Hossain said: “We have formed a three-member investigation committee comprising Civil Surgeon Dr Abdus Salam, Dr Zahid and me following deaths of so many women at childbirth.”
The committee did not find any anesthesia equipment and autoclaving machine for washing and sterilizing surgical
tools. Civil Surgeon of Jhenidah Dr Abdus Salam said the women suffered high fever before their deaths. They started complaining of high fever after a short time of giving birth to their children.
Each one of them was admitted to the clinics and hospitals with high fever, but none survived.
The new mothers might have died of infection as he saw garbage poled up in the operation theatre of the clinic.
“We have sealed off the clinic last week. We will send investigation report to higher authorities as soon as possible,” the CS added.
Shahidul Islam Shahin, officer-in-charge of Moheshpur police station, confirmed the deaths of new mothers, saying that two families of victims filed two cases against clinic owners, doctors and nurses. They all are now absconding.
