The Awami League (AL) yesterday said whether the BNP will contest the general election or not will be clear in October. “This is not the right time to speculate whether the BNP will participate in the national election to be held by the end of the year,” AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said at a press conference yesterday at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office in Dhaka. Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, claimed BNP leaders were divided over the party’s participation in the next polls.
He also said the next election will be held as per schedule. “Time and tide wait for none. Similarly, the next election train will not wait for the BNP. The polls will be held on time as in other democratic countries,” he added. The AL leader said BNP had now become a self-declared corrupt political party by scrapping Section 7 of its party constitution.
Quader refuted the involvement of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in a series of attacks on teachers and students demanding quota reforms. “At present, there is no BCL committee. So, we will have to figure out whether BCL activists were involved in the recent attacks or was it the handiwork of miscreants,” he added.
