The BNP yesterday accused the government of trying to amend the Representation of the Peoples Order (RPO) to remove Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman from their party’s leadership and disqualify them from contesting the forthcoming general election. “The government is conspiring against our party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, and acting chairman Tarique Rahman. It's trying to induct a new section in the RPO in line with Section 7 of the BNP constitution that was dropped during the last national council session in 2016,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a press conference at the BNP’s Naya Paltan office in Dhaka, Fakhrul said credible sources have informed the party that the government wanted to remove Khaleda and Tarique from the party’s leadership by adding the section to the RPO through the Election Commission (EC).
The move was taken to disqualify Khaleda and Tarique for the national polls, he added. EC secretary Helaluddin Ahmed, however, denied any such move. “The EC has no plan to bring any amendment to the RPO before the next general elections,” he said. He also said political leaders should check the facts before making any comment. Fakhrul also alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had made some “bizarre and false” claims in Parliament on Wednesday regarding the amendment of the BNP party charter. “Section 7 of the BNP constitution was amended at our sixth national council and it was later submitted to the EC,” he added.
