Man found dead in capital

Police recovered the body of a young man from Amtala in the capital's Banani area yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Rashed, 38, a bodyguard of Yusuf Sardar Jewel, convener of Banani unit Jubo League.

Being informed by locals, police recovered the body of Rashed from the Amtala road around 5 am and sent it to the local hospital morgue for autopsy.

The victim's wife Moushumi filed a case with Banani Police Station accusing Yusuf.

The body bore several injury marks, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (media).

Police are investigating the incident, he added.

Body recovered from train roof

A young man was found dead on the roof of a train at Joydebpur Rail Junction here on Saturday midnight.

SM Rakibul Haq, sub-inspector of Railway Police camp, said being informed by a cleaner of the railway, police recovered the body of an unidentified young man, aged about 20 years, wearing black pant and black-white cheque shirt from the roof of 'Lalmoni Express' around 12 am.

The victim's body bore several injury marks, said police. They suspected that miscreants might have killed him and looted valuables from his possession.

26 ‘drug peddlers’ jailed

A Mobile court yesterday sentenced 26 drug peddlers to different jail terms on charge of taking drugs and drug trading in the district.

Earlier Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested 29 persons for their alleged involvement in drug dealing. Of them, 26 were sentenced to jail from six months to one year terms each by the mobile court.

The elite force arrested 29 people conducting a drive in Guripara area under Kasiadanga Police Station in Rajshahi city on Saturday.

The RAB officials here yesterday said they also seized 262 grams of ganja and some other drugs-taking instruments from their possession.

Later, the arrestees were produced before the mobile court. After examining the evidences, the court sentenced 10 of them to jail for one year each and 16 others to six months each. Three other arrested persons were fined Taka 500, Taka 1,000 and Taka 2,000 respectively.

Saiful Islam, assistant superintendent of police working at RAB, said different courts sent more than 456 drug addicts to jail during the last 18 days.

14th AGM of Wild Team held

Conservation organisation Wild Team held their 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday at the capital’s Cosmos Centre.

During the AGM, a five-member executive committee was elected comprising Enayetullah Khan as Chairman of the board, Enam Ul Haque as the Vice Chairman, Professor Md Anwarul Islam as the General Secretary, Dr Gawsia Wahidunnessa Chowdhury as the Treasurer and Professor M Harunur Rashid as a member, said a press release.

Enayetullah Khan is the Managing Director of Cosmos Group, as well as the Editor-in-Chief of United News of Bangladesh (UNB), Editor and Publisher of Dhaka Courier and Chairman of Cosmos Foundation.

Road accident kills college teacher

A college teacher was killed in a road accident at Laldighee Bazar point on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway in the district yesterday, police said.

“The deceased was identified as Rabiul Islam, 28, Lecturer of Pirganj Degree College and son of late Abdul Hakim of village Bhimsahar under Pirganj upazila in the district,” said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pirganj Thana Rezaul Karim.

The accident occurred when an unidentified truck hit the running motorcycle of Rabiul Islam from the behind at the point while he was returning home from the college as usual after classes.

“The Lecturer was critically injured in the accident. Local people immediately sent him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. But, he succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital,” the OC added. No case was filed in this connection with Pirganj Thana, police said.
