Two killed in ‘gunfights’ in Jhenidah, Laxmipur

A suspected robber and a listed drug peddler were killed in two separate ‘gunfights’ in Jhenidah and Laxmipur districts yesterday and on early Wednesday, reports UNB. In Jhenidah, a suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police early yesterday in Purundapur village of Maheshpur upazila. The deceased was identified as Nurul Islam alias Nur Dakat, 48, of the village. He was wanted in several cases.

Being tipped-off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there around 1:45am, said Md Salauddin, additional superintendent of Kotchandpur (circle) police. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire to law enforcers prompting them to fire back in self-defence.

At one stage, Nur caught in the line of fire and died on

the spot. Police also recovered two bombs, one bullet and a sharp weapon from the spot.

Meanwhile in Laxmipur, a listed   drug trader was killed during a ‘gunfight’ with police members at Charpatha under Rapiur upazila of the district on early Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Sohel, son of Abdul Munaf at Raipur upazila. Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Raipur Police Station, said a team of police arrested Sohel from Jhumur Cinema Hall area of the district town on Tuesday afternoon.

Later, police along with Sohel conducted a drive on Raipur-Chandpur highway to arrest his associates around 3am. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire to police forcing them to fire back. At one stage, Sohel sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight and was taken to Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Two policemen were also injured during the incident. One LG gun, three bullets and 300 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
