Indian home minister arrives today to discuss security, border

DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENT

Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh will arrive in the capital on a three-day official visit to take part in the 6th ministerial-level talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan. During the talks on Sunday, the home ministers of two next door neighbours are expected to discuss issues related to security, border management, cooperation in countering illegal activities and travel arrangements, said an Indian high commission press release yesterday.

The visit of the home minister is expected to facilitate a comprehensive review of the excellent bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh and contribute to the further strengthening of ties, it said.

The visit, at the invitation of home minister Khan, is taking place in the context of home minister level talks held on a regular basis between India and Bangladesh. The last home minister level talks were held in New Delhi in July 2016.

While in Bangladesh, the Indian home minister is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.  He is also scheduled to inaugurate, with his Bangladeshi counterpart, a new ‘state-of-art’ integrated Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at the Jamuna Future Park.

Tomorrow, Singh will travel to Rajshahi to jointly inaugurate the Bangladesh-India Friendship Building at the Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah, Rajshahi with Khan.

UNB adds: Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office yesterday.

At the meeting, they mainly discussed the progress of the projects being implemented in Bangladesh with Indian cooperation, said PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim while briefing reporters after the meeting. The Prime Minister said Bangladesh and India witnessed a remarkable progress in the cooperation on different areas, particularly in the field of power and energy over the last nine years.

She said her government deeply appreciates Indian support and cooperation in the power and energy sectors and would like to explore more avenues of cooperation. Sheikh Hasina hoped that India will continue to cooperate with Bangladesh in ensuring energy security.

The Indian envoy informed the Prime Minister of the present state of power projects and their future plan. The two sides are discussing new power projects for subsequent export to Bangladesh, West Bengal and eastern part of India.

Hasina said Bangladesh has allocated 1000 acres of land in economic zone for Indian investors where they, if wish, can set up LNG projects.

Shringla informed the Prime Minister of the 3-day visit of Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh to Bangladesh from July 13, 2018 and his visit to the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah to strengthen cooperation between the police academies of the two countries.

Hasina recalled her visit to Shantiniketan in May last and her talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Indian High Commissioner said the Prime Minister’s visit to Shantiniketan left a very good impact on the relations and cooperation between the two countries. PM’s principal secretary Md. Nojibur Rahman was present at the meeting.
