Social security schemes bring cheer to people

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Nilphamari
Social security schemes bring cheer to people

Thanks to social security programmes, the standard of living of 25,00,000 ultra-poor people under eight districts of the Rangpur division has undergone a big change.  The beneficiaries describe programmes launched by the prime minister as “patriotism”, “development thinking”, “political philosophy” and as a “real step towards doing something for the masses”.

Director (joint secretary) of local government, Rangpur division, Md Zakir Hossain said several years ago due to ‘monga’ (severe famine), the people of Rangpur division had been reduced to living a subhuman life. Now, with financial and food assistance being given to the ultra-poor, ‘mogna’ had disappeared for ever.

The number of ultra poor in 58 upazilas under Rangpur division who are now the beneficiaries of this prime minister’s special programmes is more than 25 lakh .

Some 4,26,676 people are getting old-age allowance, some 1,26,167 women are getting the widow allowance, another 19 lakh are getting the OMS, VGD, VGF , and  TR facilities from various programmes including the food-for-work scheme. The social programmes are running in 563 union parishads and 28 civic councils under 58 upazilas of the division. Every month, a total of 10 lakh poor women are being given 10 kg of rice each and 8 lakh poor mothers are being provided maternity allowance.

One Rasheda Begum of Balapara union under Kaunia upazila told this correspondent, “Though I have three sons, they don’t look after me. So, one day, I went to the UP chairman and he managed an old-age allowance card for me.”

She further said, thanks to Sheikh Hasina, innumerable people were getting the old-age allowance.

Another person, who identified himself as Sahabul Ali, 64, of the same area, used to live by pulling a rickshaw van earlier, but is now too infirm to do that due to old age. He said, “I am surviving on the old age-allowance.”

A teacher of Begum Rokeya University Tuhin Oyadud said the social security programmes were helping the poor in a big way.

The chairman of Rangpur division vice chairman association Md Abdur Razzaque said more than 25 lakh people were benefiting from the social security programmes and their standard of living had changed significantly.

Md Sahidar Rahman, a teacher and a civil society representative, said the social security programmes should be maintained properly and with honesty so that no one can misuse them.

Rangpur divisional commissioner Md Kazi Hasan Ahmed said the prime minister’s 10 priority projects were being properly implemented in Rangpur division.
