Law Minister Anisul Huq said his ministry is making all-out efforts to finalise the mediation rules to complement the Civil Procedure Code and the possibility of recognition of ADR institutions, such as Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC), in the rules. He mentioned that the government has instructed inclusion of an arbitration clause in every government contract that has a value of up to US$ 50 million and to hold the arbitrations in Dhaka alone. Huq also appreciated BIAC for its efforts and commitment to promote ADR in the country, reports UNB.
The Law Minister was addressing a seminar, ‘Alternative Dispute Resolution: The Way Forward’, on Saturday night at a city hotel organised by the Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre, the country’s first and only Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) institution which has stepped into its fifth year of functioning.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, former Chief Justice Latifur Rahman, Head of DFID Bangladesh Sarah Cooke and Mohammad Shahidul Haque, among others, spoke at the seminar held with BIAC Chairman Mahbubur Rahman in the chair, said a press release yesterday. Tofail Ahmed suggested the adoption of ADR under BIAC Rules in such cases and thanked ICCI-Bangladesh; DCCI and MCCI, Dhaka for setting up this Centre under private sector initiative. Latifur Rahman said effective steps for alternative dispute resolution are vital to make Bangladesh an investment-oriented country.
