Eight killed in road mishaps

At least eight people were killed in separate road accidents in Narsingdi, Gazipur, Meherpur, Noakhali and Gopalganj districts yesterday.Our Narsingdi correspondent reports: Three people were killed in a road accident near Rainadi area in Narsingdi sadar upazila yesterday. The deceased were identified as Dr Sirajul Islam, 58, chairman of Sirajul Islam Medical College at Mogbazar of Dhaka and his brother-in-law Abdul Khaleque, 60, and private car driver, Antar, 33.
Police said the Brahmanbaria bound private car from Dhaka collided head-on with a truck on Dhaka-Sylhet highway, leaving three persons injured. Local people rushed to the spot and sent them to Sirajul Islam Medical College Hospital where they died in the afternoon. A case was filed with Narsingdi sadar police. Our Gazipur correspondent says: Two people were killed and three others injured in a collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a human hauler at Lohai Bazar area on Joina Bazar-Kaoraid road in Sreepur upazila yesterday morning.
The deceased were identified as Liakat Ali, 27, Niguary village under Gafargaon upazila of Mymensing district and Mokhlsur Rahman, 42, of the same village.
 Liakot was an operator of a garment factory in Mulaid area of Sreepur and Mokhlesur Rahman was an employee of Petrobangla Dhaka office.
 Golam Kibria, sub-inspector of Sreepur model police station, said a fish laden Kaoraid bound human hauler from Joina Bazaar collided with  CNG driven auto-rickshaw at around 7am, leaving Liakat dead on the spot and four passengers of auto-rickshaw injured. Local people rescued the injured and sent them to Sreepur upazila health complex. Of them, Mokhles died on the way to the hospital.
In Meherpur, a schoolboy was killed in a road accident yesterday morning at Bhatpara village in Gangni upazila.
The victim was identified as Hridoy Hossain, 7, son of Sharifuddin of the village and a student of class-II at Bhatpara Government Primary School.
Akram Hossain, Officer-in-charge of Gangni police station, quoting family sources said the accident occurred while a human hauler carrying Hridoy skidded off the road on his way to school in the morning, leaving him dead on the spot.
In Noakhali, an old man was killed when a motorcycle hit him at Biri in Hatiya upazla yesterday morning. Police arrested the motorcyclist.
The deceased was identified as Mawlana Abul Kahir, 50, of Jasmera union parishad.
Sagarika police camp in-charge Luatfar Rahman said the accident took place at around 10:30am when a motorcyclist knocked down the old man while he was crossing the road.
In Gopalganj, a vegetable trader was killed as a passenger bus crushed a rickshaw van on the Dhaka-Khulna highway.
“The bus hit the vegetable-laden van from back at Vatiapara crossing area of Kashiani upazila, killing vendor Babu Sheikh instantly and injuring two others,” officer-in-charge of Kasiani police station Monirul Islam said.
