Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad has said no other parties are left in the country except his own to protest the undemocratic activities of the government.
The JP chief was speaking as the chief guest at the bi-annual conference of the party’s Jessore district unit at Jessore Zila School auditorium yesterday noon.
Ershad, also a former president, heavily criticised the government’s decision to impose VAT on education and said education is not like any other product or goods.
“People have become suffocated due to the rule of the Awami League, Juba League, Chhatra League, Shishu League and so many other leagues,” Ershad, also a special envoy to the prime minister, said.
Claiming that corruption has spread in every sector, the JP chairman said, “We do not want a democracy like this, but a true democracy.”
“Babies are now getting wounded in their mothers’ womb, which we had never heard before… democracy has turned into a mere statue,” said Ershad.
Those engaging in mischief are being encouraged due to a state of lawlessness, he said adding that the people want change and the Jatiya Party is the only whistleblower.
At the meeting, the JP chief declared Shariful Islam and Minhazul Abedin as Jessore district unit president and general secretary respectively.
Chaired by Shariful Islam, convener, Jessore district unit of the party, the conference was addressed among others by party secretary general Ziauddin Bablu, MP, presidium members Anisul Islam Mahmud, Sunil Shubha Roy, Taz Rahman, joint secretary general Rezaul Islam Bhuyan, and other local leaders.
