Schoolgirl raped in Bagerhat

Bagerhat: A schoolgirl was raped at Gharmul in Fakirhat upazila of the district on Sunday, reports UNB.

Locals caught the alleged rapist, Quamrul Islam, 40, a local carpenter and son of Aziz Sheikh of Gharmul, and handed him over to police.

Officer-in-charge of Fakirhat Model Police Station Jagannath Chandra said Aziz seduced the girl into going to his shop while she was going to school on Sunday morning, and violated her there.

A local woman noticed the incident and raised alarm when others rushed in and caught Aziz.

Aziz was later handed over to police, the OC said, adding that the victim’s father filed a case in this regard.

2 bank officials, 3 teachers among six jailed for ‘taking drugs’

Lalmonirhat: A mobile court here on Monday sentenced six people, including two Sonali Bank officials and three teachers, to seven days’ imprisonment for allegedly taking drugs in Hatibandha upazila, reports UNB.

The convicts are Raihanul Kabir and Habibur Rahman, cash officers of Gangachhara branch of Sonali Bank in Rangpur district, branch peon Shahriar Hossain, Abdul Hakim, a teacher of Rangpur Takia Sharif Hafizia Alim Madrasah, and Abhinash Chandra and Moti Chandra Roy, teachers of Bagpur Masum Ali High School.

Shaheed Suhrawardi, assistant senior police super of Lalmonirhat, said a group of people, numbering 8-10, took drugs at Josnar Bazar of Hatibandha on Sunday night.

Locals caught them while returning and gave them a good thrashing. On information, police rushed in and tried to rescue them, said Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of Hatibandha Police Station.

However, locals swooped on the law enforcers, prompting them to swing into action, leaving one Ranjit injured.

Later, police took all of the six to the police station.

On Monday, they were produced before a mobile court, led by UNO Nur Kutubul Alam, which sentenced them to seven days’ imprisonment.

Easy-bike driver electrocuted  

Magura: An easy-bike driver died from electrocution at Kashinathpur village in Sadar upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.

Bike driver Ronny Ahmed, 25, son of Towhid Matabbar, got electrocuted while he was connecting the charger of his easy-bike to an electricity line at his home around 7am and died on the spot, said Elius Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
