The regular and casual workers of nine state-owned jute mills under the banner of Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) and Non-CBA Oikya Parishad jointly staged a demonstration in Khulna-Jessore industrial belt yesterday to press home their five-point demand. The demonstrators wrapping up their heads with red ribbons and carrying sticks in their hands brought out a procession from Platinum Jubilee Jute Mill gate around 10:00 am that marched through Khalishpur and Atra industrial belts in the city.
On the first day of their five-day programme, nearly 10,000 demonstrating workers marched the streets in the Khalishpur and Atra areas chanting slogans about their demands. The seven state-owned jute mills in Khulna region, out of the total nine, from which the agitating workers are include Crescent, Platinum, Star, Aleem, Eastern, JJI and Carpeting Jute Mills.
Their five-point demand for which the workers have gone on movement include payment of their arrear wages and other financial benefits, twenty percent dearness allowance, allocation of adequate fund to purchase raw materials for running the jute mills undisturbed to reach production target, explore markets at home and abroad for selling products and removal of corrupt officials to make the administrations of the mills transparent.
They also held a rally with convener of the committee and general secretary of CBA of Crescent Jute Mills Md Sohrab Hossain in the chair.
Among others, member secretary of central committee and joint convener of CBA of Eastern Jute Mills Md Shah Alam, general secretary of Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills Employees Union Khalilur Rahman, president of CBA of Crescent Jute Mills Md Din Islam and member secretary of Non-CBA Oikya Parishad SM Zakir Hossain spoke on the occasion, among others.
The convener of the Oiyka Parishad Md Sohrab Hossain said their five-day fresh movement was announced on Friday afternoon from a rally at BIDC Road in front of Crescent Jute Mill gate at Khalishpur.
Sohrab Hossain said that the workers would continue their movement until their demands were met fully. Otherwise, workers will go on movement for indefinite period which include road and rail blockade and then fast-unto-death programme.
The agitators will bring out a procession today at 10:00 am carrying red flag in their hands, they will form a human chain tomorrow with participation of their family members, on September 16, they will besiege all their respective mills and on September 18, they will hold a rally in front of respective mill gates wrapping up their heads with red ribbons, said Shorab Hossain.
