Fellows rally for punishment for �wrong treatment�

Several hundred students of Gazipur Government Women’s College formed a human chain in the city yesterday demanding punishment for doctors of a private clinic for ‘wrong treatment’ that killed their fellow Sharmin Sarker.
Sharmin Sarker, a student of the college, died while under treatment at Uttra Adhunik Hospital on June 13. The students, also joined by the deceased’s family members, formed the human chain on Rajbari road adjacent to the Gazipur deputy commissioner’s office demanding punishment for the doctors of the hospital for ‘wrong surgical operation’ that caused Sharmin’s death. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner,  SM Alam.
At a rally, following the human chain, victim’s mother Sufia Sarker said that Sharmin had been admitted to Uttra Adhunik Hospital in capital on May 30 for treatment of a cyst in her tongue under the supervision of Prof Dr Firoz Ahmed. Dr Firoz Ahmed had promised that he would perform a surgical operation on her daughter’s tongue. But Dr Froz did not do that accordingly the operation. Dr Abul Hossain, an assistant of Dr. Firoz, performed the surgery, at the end of which Sharmin’s condition worsened. Later, she was shifted to the ICU of the hospital where she died on June 13 on life support.
Sharmin’s mother filed a case with Uttara (west) police station against Prof Dr Firoz Ahmed, the head of the ENT department of the hospital,  Dr. Assistant Professor Abul Hossain, his assistant,  Assistant Professor M.A. Karim of the Department of Anesthesia and Dr Faizul Islam Chowdhury, a junior consultant of the same department. She claimed that her daughter died for wrong treatment. Family members of the deceased and students of the college demanded   punishment for the doctors responsible for the death of Sharmin.
