Teachers of the country’s public universities yesterday advised Finance Minister AMA Muhith to step down with dignity.
“We don’t want to talk to the Finance Minister as he has no respect for teachers. He won’t understand our words properly…he has grown old. It’s time for him to step down,” said Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, president of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA), at a press conference at Dhaka University Teachers’ club.
The agitating teachers also sought the intervention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to get a separate pay scale and fulfill other demands. In a statement, they also demanded the formation of an independent commission over the matter so that their ‘just rights’ can be secured.
Teachers of 37 private universities also observed work abstention yesterday to press home their demands.
At the press conference, the teachers also warned of tougher programmes after Eid-ul-Azha vacation and said they would continue their work abstention and sit-in programme on September 17 unless any pragmatic and constructive step is taken by the government.
Leaders of the federation also said that they don’t want to see Finance Minister AMA Muhith as the head of the ‘salary disparity committee’ as, they claimed, the minister has made himself controversial by delivering ‘vindictive’ comment about the teachers.
“The person who has already put himself as the opponent of the education system and educational institutions should not lead the committee. That would be unacceptable,” the leaders said.
