The police on Saturday night arrested seven activists of the outlawed Hizb ut-Tahrir from Khilkhet in the capital on charges of spreading anti-state propaganda to set up a Caliphate using the Internet, and posting messages on Facebook and other social networking sites.
Later, a Dhaka court yesterday placed them on seven days remand. Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate passed the order upon a 10-day remand prayer.
The arrests were made by a team of the cyber crime protection unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Sheikh Nazmul Alam, deputy commissioner of DMP, said, "A team of Detective and Crime Protection Division arrested five members of the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir around 11pm on Saturday night. Leaflets, Jihadi books and mobile sets were recovered from their possession."
The arrested persons were identified as Ekramul Khayer alias Opu, Md Abdul Kaiyum alias Kaiyum, Md Nazmul Hasan alias Nipon, Md Ibrahim Sheikh and Md Rashedul Islam Sheikh. In the course of primary interrogation they reportedly confessed to have planned to unleash anarchy in the name of establishing a Caliphate.
Ekramul Khayer alias Opu, Md Abdul Kaiyun alias Kaiyum, Md Ibrahim Sheikh and Md Rashedul Islam Sheikh had recently been in jail as they were accused under the Anti-terrorism Act, a DMP release stated on Sunday.
In another drive, the Detective Brach (DB) of DMP arrested two other activists of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Md Ariful Islam and ASM Tareq Amin, from Khilkhet in the capital around 6:30pm on the same day.
