The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has planned conducting a special drive initially in the posh areas of the capital city of Dhaka to identify potential taxpayers and bring in them under the tax-net, reports BSS.
“The NBR will carry out a door to door survey in the posh areas of capital city so it could bring in the potential taxpayers under the tax-net,” NBR Chairman Nojibur Rahman told the news agency yesterday.
During the survey, NBR teams with cooperation from local government, public work department and inland resource division would make a list of the residential houses, shops and other commercial and business establishments in the richer parts of the Dhaka metropolis, said the NBR chief.
He said the revenue authorities have targeted brining in 3 lakh 20 thousand new taxpayers under the tax-net to expedite revenue earnings.
He said the government planned increasing the taxpayers’ number to 30 lakh in next three to four years time, and the NBR has been working in line with the target.
Currently, only 18 lakh people submit income tax return when the NBR targets collecting 1 lakh 76 thousand crore in revenue in the current 2015-16 financial year.
Rahman said besides conducting regular and the special surveys, the NBR had also initiated dialogues with different chambers and trade-bodies to get necessary cooperation from them in mobilising more revenue.
An NBR official told the agency that tax authorities had also directed its 300 circle offices to form teams and conduct survey at least three times a week. The teams will prepare lists of new taxpayers and send those to the respective circle in every month.
Meanwhile UNB adds: The preparation for holding the tax fair in 86 upazilas across the country is at the final stage aiming to increase the number of taxpayers in the country.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) for the first time has decided to hold its annual tax fair in 86 upazilas across the country apart of other places to attract eligible taxpayers to regular tax payment.
The fair will take place in 29 upazilas for two days and 57 upazilas for one day between September 16 and September 22.
Last year, the tax fair was held in the divisional headquarters for seven days, 54 districts for four days and three hill districts for two days.
The amount of tax that collected from the tax fair across the country was Tk 1675,30,73,451 and services were provided to 649,185 taxpayers. A number of 15,907 people took new e-TIN while 10,838 TIN holders took the e-TIN.
The NBR in 2010 for the first time in the country organised the fair in Dhaka and Chittagong to provide one-stop services to taxpayers.
“The Board has already directed the commissioners of the respective tax zones and the preparation is at the final stage,” a senior official of the NBR told the news agency.
He said the Board believes that there are huge eligible taxpayers still remain out of the tax net at the upazila level. “We would like to bring them under the tax net. These eligible people will be encouraged if they see that the taxmen are at their doorsteps,” he said.
This year NBR has got a target of Tk 176,370 crore for the 2015-16 fiscal. An amount of Tk 64,971 crore will have come from income tax, while Tk 64,262 crore from VAT and Tk 18,752 from import duty.
