US embassy acts like BNP mouthpiece

Says Joy in facebook post

Prime Minister’s ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy has strongly criticised the US embassy in Dhaka, accusing it of turning into a ‘sort of’ BNP mouthpiece. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son made the comment in a Facebook post yesterday night referring to the recent comments by the US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat over the city elections.

“They are parroting BNP claims about the recent election in Gazipur and emphasizing irregularities, while making absolutely no comment on the BNP's attempt to cause violence in that election,” wrote Joy in his Facebook status.

Joy claimed that there were irregularities in nine polling centres out of 425, which is a mere 2.1%. “There were irregularities in 9 polling center out of 425, which is just 2.1%. The Election Commission

suspended polling in those centers and canceled the vote, which is exactly what they are supposed to do,” he said.

“Our new Mayor Jahangir Alam received double the votes of BNP's Hasan, a margin of over 200,000 votes. All poll observers stated that the few irregularities could not have affected the outcome,” Joy said.

“BNP’s Central Executive Committee leader Mizanur Rahman Mizan was recorded on the phone organizing violence to make the election controversial. The US Embassy makes no mention of any of this. The current US Government has a strict policy of not interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, so this is just the local Embassy's opinion,” said Joy. As usual, the Embassy officials have been spending too much time with their BNP friends, he added.

BNP leader Mizanur was arrested after audio clips of his ‘phone conversations’ with others were published on social media.

During a meeting with diplomatic reporters in Dhaka on Jun 28, US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat highlighted Bangladesh’s democratic process and elections in Khulna and Gazipur, and indicated that stability comes through holding free, fair and credible elections. “While we commend the Khulna and Gazipur city corporation elections, the US remains concerned by reports of irregularities, including ballot box stuffing and intimidation of political players and polling agents both before and on the day of the vote,” Bernicat had said.

Earlier, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader had suggested Bernicat against making comments that can strain the relations and draw negative reaction from the people.
