Over a hundred eminent citizens of the country yesterday issued a joint statement denouncing the 'killings' taking place in the ongoing anti-drug drive across the country, reports UNB. The statement was jointly issued by 121 eminent citizens including politicians, academics, writers, lawyers and cultural activists under the banner of "National Committee against Fascism and Capitalism". The statement said, "More than 150 people were killed by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police without any trial from the middle of May across the country which is still continuing. We are strongly condemning such planned killings."
They demanded an end to persistent killings and transparent trial process of the killings immediately. They also demanded punishment of the planners and implementers of the killings. "In the name of announcing zero tolerance against crimes, the state has commuted the convicted criminal and assisted him to leave the country, placed no trial for unprecedented corruptions and lootings, took no legal steps against the law enforcers who were involved with drug dealing that has exposed the hypocritical stand of the government before the people.", it said.
They demanded announcement of a list along with full names and addresses of each killed persons of the anti-drug drives, ensuring all the democratic rights of citizens along with security of their lives and basic rights. They also asked for trial of all the law enforcers who threatened, harassed and killed people as they allegedly violated the Constitution and rule of law.
