Remand for poll saboteur

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) central executive committee leader Major (retd) Mizanur Rahman Mizan has been remanded in police custody for two days for allegedly conspiring to make the Gazipur city polls look controversial.

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) produced Mizan before the court yesterday and sought his remand for seven days for the sake of interrogation. After the hearing, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Mazaharul Huq granted the DB two days to question him.

The DB (North) arrested five people, including Mizan, in the wee hours of Tuesday on charges of planning to sabotage the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election.

The other four accused in the case were arrested from Ashulia. They are: Md Shafiqul Islam, 43, Md Dinat, 26, Md Asad Ali, 22, and Md Junaid Hossain Joy, 16.

The court remanded Shafiqul, Dinat and Asad Ali for a day for questioning, while Joy was referred to a juvenile court.

Mizan was shown arrested in a case filed with Dhanmondi police station.

The case statement said he had planned to sabotage the GCC poll at Kalabagan Club on Monday. It also mentioned that Mizan and his associates planned to wear fake badges and then cast fake ballots in the polling booths to post photos on the social media with the help of wristwatches containing secret cameras.

Three cameras were seized from the accused during the detention.

Moshiur Rahman, deputy police commissioner of the DB (north), confirmed the news about Mizan’s remand.

Earlier, A YouTube channel, Conspiracy Link, uploaded the audio clips containing telephonic conversations apparently between Mizan and Shafiqul Islam.

Moshiur Rahman said they were certain that it was Mizan’s voice in the audio clips and that prompted his arrest.

He told The Independent that Mizan had given hidden cameras to BNP leaders and workers in Shimulia Union of Savar on Monday as part of his plan. Some of those cameras have been recovered.

The DB said Mizan had conspired to stage a mock fight with firearms in the name of the Awami League (AL) and shoot the scene with hidden cameras. They had planned to spread such fake videos to create tension in the area.
