Development works lead to win, says AL

The Awami League (AL) has credited the government’s development works and the party’s organisational strength and unity for its landslide win in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election.

Boosted by the electoral victory, AL insiders claimed that no political party in the country would be able to defeat it in any election if party leaders and workers remained united. Besides, the people were satisfied with the ongoing development works of the Sheikh Hasina government and this spurred their decision to cast votes in favour of Nouka (AL’s poll symbol) in the local government polls, they added.

The AL-nominated mayoral candidate, Jahangir Alam, was declared the winner in the GCC polls yesterday. He defeated his rival BNP contender, Hasan Uddin Sarker, by a big margin.

As per the results from 416 centres out of the 425 polling stations in 57 wards in Gazipur city, Jahangir Alam bagged a total of 400,010 votes, while his BNP rival could only manage to get 197,611 votes. The AL’s huge victory in the Gazipur civic poll came after a similar win in Khulna. However, both elections have been marred by allegations of widespread irregularities and vote rigging.

In his reaction to the Gazipur win, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader told The Independent that the people were inspired by the present government’s ongoing development works as well as the spirit of the Liberation War.

“The people of Gazipur want development and that’s why they voted for ‘Nouka’ in the GCC polls. The Gazipur poll results have proved that the people don’t like BNP’s negative and violent politics,” he added.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said the GCC polls were held in a free, fair and neutral manner. He also hoped that the people would cast their votes for Nouka in all the upcoming polls, including the next general election scheduled to be held by the end of this year.

Quader’s party colleague and AL joint general secretary, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, echoed his words. “The Sheikh Hasina government has carried out huge development works across the country and the people are happy. I hope the people will also cast their votes in favour of us in the next general election in order to continue the pace of development,” he said.

“The people now don’t believe in only lip services, but want real development on the ground,” he added.

“No party would be able to defeat AL in the coming days if we remain united like we were in Gazipur and Khulna,” he said.

AL organising secretary Muhibul Hassan Chowdhury (Noufel) also credited the party’s organisational strength and the government’s development works for the Gazipur win. “Besides, the BNP-backed mayor had not done anything for the people of Gazipur in the last five years. This is another reason for the AL candidate’s victory. Moreover, Gazipur is an AL bastion and so it is normal that the city people would vote for Nouka,” he said.

Meanwhile, the BNP has rejected the Gazipur polls as “rigged” and demanded immediate re-election.

In the last GCC polls held on July 6, 2013, Gazipur’s AL city unit president Azmat Ullah Khan, who was the official party candidate, was defeated by BNP candidate MA Mannan. Jahangir Alam had contested the electon as a rebel candidate.
