SL ‘A Team’ restricted to 171/4 on Day 1

Sports Reporter

Sri Lanka ‘A’ Team garnered 171 for four against their Bangladesh counterparts on the opening day of the maiden unofficial Test of the three-match series at the shifted venue of the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram yesterday.

The match was previously scheduled to hold at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar but due to the prevailing inclement weather in the coastal town, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) shifted the venue only for the tour opener to Chattogram from Cox’s Bazar.

Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne opted to bat after winning the toss and mislaid their opener Lahiru Milantha inside eight over when local pacer Khaled Ahmed made an inroad and sent back Milantha having caught behind for four.

Together with experienced Lahiru Thirimanne, the visitors’ captain attempted to steady the innings and their effort was going on right track but Khaled once again hurt the visitors’ innings when he trapped leg before Karunaratne, who slammed a useful 85 with Thirimanne for the second-wicket stand.

The captain, of course, made his fifty-plus score of 60 off 106 what he did with the help of seven boundaries before being lbw.

Thirimanne then tried to accelerate the strike with the fellow batsmen. This one-down batsman clouted 46-run third-wicket with Ashan Priyanjan but uprising fast-bowlers Khaled and Abu Haider Rony did not allow them more meaning Sri Lanka were 146 for four from 143 for three as the Islanders, at this stage, lost their two wickets in the space of four runs.

Priyanjan belted for 23 and wicketkeeper-batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama fell for just two. Thirimanne remained at stumps on 66 with Charith Asalanka scoring 12 before the bails were drawn for the second day.

Khaled Ahmed grabbed three for 37 and Abu Haider Rony claimed one for 22.

Fast-bowlers Mohammad Saifuddin and Soumya Sarkar along with spinners Naeem Hasan, Nazmul Islam and Mosaddek Hossain Saikat remained wicketless despite having bowled.

The second match of the four-dayer series will be held at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium (SKICS) Academy ground on July 3.
