BNP leader Mizan held for sabotage plans

The Detective Branch (north) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested five people, including Maj. (retd) Mizanur Rahman Mizan, a member of the central executive committee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on charges of planning to sabotage the Gazipur City Corporation Election (GCC).

Zonayed Hossain Joy, Asad Ali, Zinnat Ali and Abu Taher are among others who were arrested in this connection. Mizan was picked up from his Gulshan residence along with some electronic devices early yesterday. Moshiur Rahman, deputy police commissioner of the DB (north), confirmed the news. “Mizan and four others have been detained for trying to sabotage the GCC election,” he said. DB sources said that two audio clips revealed the conspiracy to sabotage the Gazipur civic poll.

A YouTube channel, Conspiracy Link, uploaded the audio clips contaning telephonic conversations between Mizan and a local leader of the Shimulia Union Jubo Dal in Ashulia, Safidul Islam.

Moshiur Rahman told The Independent: “Mizan was arrested after we received the audio clips. He is being sued under the ICT Act. He was sued several times before with different cases.”

“Mizan planned to sabotage the election to the GCC yesterday. He conspired to create artificial fighting using firearms in the name of the Awami League (AL) and shoot them with hidden cameras. They planned to spread such fake videos to create tension,” he said.

Moshiur Rahman also claimed that Mizan had given hidden cameras to BNP leaders and workers in Shimulia Union of Savar on Monday as part of his plan. Some of those cameras have been recovered.

“We're taking preparation to file a case against the arrested persons under the ICT act. All of them are now in our custody for initial interrogation. After checking everything and finishing  paperwork, we'll file a case,” said the deputy commissioner.
