A total of 218 prospective candidates of the ruling Awami League (AL), the BNP, the Jatiya Party and other parties, as well as women contesting reserved seats, have collected nomination papers to take part in the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) polls. Among them are two mayoral candidates, 167 potential candidates for councillor posts, and 51 for women’s reserved seats. A total of 14 councillor candidates and eight women candidates for reserved seats have submitted their nomination papers till Monday, said Rajshahi zilla election officer Atiar Rahman.

The deadline for the collection of nomination forms is June 28. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on July 1 and 2, according to the Election Commission (EC).

Advocate Kamrul Monir, adviser to the BNP's chairperson, Khaleda Zia, collected nomination forms from the Rajshahi election office on Monday noon, on behalf of the BNP-nominated mayoral candidate Mosadded Hossain Bulbul. He said leaders and activists of the local BNP hoped that the RCC election will be held in a free and fair manner.

On the other hand, after returning from Dhaka with the party's nomination, AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, president of the Awami League’s Rajshahi city unit, exchanged greetings with local leaders, activists and local people at Sagarpara Pachani Math area under Ward-23 of the city on Monday morning.  Liton was accompanied by Dablu Sarker, secretary, Naimul Huda Rana, joint secretary, and Mir Iqbal, vice-president of the Rajshahi city unit of the Awami League. Liton thanked AL president Sheikh Hasina, senior leaders and nomination board for reconsidering him as the party’s mayoral candidate for the RCC election.

Senior leader and vice-president of the Awami League’s Rajshahi city unit, Nawsher Ali, has already collected nomination papers on his behalf from the EC, he said. He will submit his nomination papers on June 28 along with AL leaders and activists, Liton said.
