Heavy showers, buoyed by an active monsoon over different parts of the country, including the capital, yesterday threw normal life out of gear. Waterlogged streets in many areas slowed down the traffic. The active monsoon triggered showers more or less everywhere, with the highest of 31 mm between 6am and 6pm being recorded in Dhaka. Earlier, Chandpur experienced the highest of 11mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours till 6am yesterday.

The rain may continue with periodic gaps for the next three to five days until the end of the next month, Arif Hossain, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office, said. The showers started around early afternoon and troubled stduents  going to schools, colleges and universities. Even the outgoing Army chief, Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq,

had to take his formal leave after handing over his baton to his successor General Aziz Ahmed yesterday at a rain-soaked ceremony at the Army Headquarters in the Dhaka Cantonment.

The police guards posted on different streets to secure the passage of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stood in silence under the rains.  Traffic police used their officially issued umbrellas to manage traffic. It was difficult job amid the downpour as they were seenr unning to run up and down the rows of vehicles caught in tailbacks.

The rain also troubled the day labourers, including women labourers, working on some of the city’s development sites.

As usual reports said, the rains flooded low-lying areas and streets, causing trouble for  smooth flow of traffic in Basundhara, Mirpur, Tejgaon, Arambagh and Motijheel areas. In many areas, water filled trenches and potholes dug by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) to improve the city’s drainage system, creating more trouble to pedestrians and traffic than the rains.

Rickshaw-pullers and auto-rickshaw drivers reaped a bonanza by charging extra fairs from their passengers .It was even difficult to get the app-aided cab services from Uber and Pathao. Though these cabs did not charge extra, they responded late and came for the pickup way later than the scheduled time.
