Tk115cr more Aus aid for Rohingyas

Australia has announced an additional assistance worth Tk 115 crore to support the Rohingyas, who had to cross into Cox’s Bazar to escape the atrocities of the Myanmar security forces, local Buddhist mobs and people from other ethnic groups in Rakhine. Julie Bishop, the Australian foreign minister, has announced the additional humanitarian funding package of AUD 18.4 million to meet the urgent needs of Rohingya people and the host community in Bangladesh affected by the crisis, said a press release forwarded by the high commissioner of Australia yesterday.

The large number of Rohingya people that have fled across the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. The government of Bangladesh is continuing to devote significant resources to this response.

The Australian government is committed to working side by side with Bangladesh to support those in need.

Australian funding will be allocated to its partners on the ground, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and World Food Program (WFP), for providing food, shelter, health and protection services to the most vulnerable people living in Cox’s Bazar.

Specifically, Australian funding will contribute to the provision of food for more than 8 lakh (800,000) people and nutrition supplements for around 1.39 lakh (139,000) women and children. It will reinforce shelters, pre-position food supplies and help relocate up to 1.35 lakh (135,000) people at the highest risk of landslides. It will also help reunite children with their families, create safe areas for vulnerable women and children and provide incomes to around 40,000 women.

The additional funding brings Australia's total humanitarian response to the Rohingya crisis to about Tk 438 crore( AUD70 million).
