Man gets life for raping girl

Satkhira: A Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal yesterday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment in a case for raping a class-V girl in the district, reports UNB.

Judge Hosne Ara Aktar handed down the verdict in the noon. The convict is Rana Sardar, 35, son of late Pachu Sardar of Bilganj village of Kalia upazila of Narail district.

The court also fined him Tk 1 lakh, in default, to suffer six months imprisonment further. According to the case statement, in the allegation of kidnapping the victim and her friend in the same case, he was also sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and was fined Tk 1 lakh, in default, to suffer additional six months imprisonment.

It stated that Rana used to live at Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira district and on July 8, 2005 he kidnaped the 14-year old victim and her 12-year friend. He took them to a hotel a Jashore and raped the elder girl.

Tipped off by the locals, the family members rescued the duo and filed a kidnap and rape case on July 9, that year. The victim was a student of class-V of Khordo BRAC School of Kalaroa upazila.

The Public Prosecutor of the case Jaharul Hidar Babu said after taking depositions from nine witnesses and reviewing all the documents, the court handed down the verdict in absence of the accused.

The convict remains absconding.

Launch staff found dead

 The body of a launch staff, who went missing on Saturday, was recovered from the Meghna River near Chandpur launch terminal yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Selim Miah, 37,a staff of ‘MV Imam Hasan’ launch and hailing from Mothbaria upazila in Pirojpur district.

Locals spotted his floating body around 9am and informed police. Later, police recovered the body, said sub-inspector Hasanuzzaman of Chandpur river police station.

Man killed ‘by brother-in-law’

Brahmanbaria: A man has been stabbed to death allegedly by his brother-in-law over a land-related dispute in Nasirnagar upazila, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Mansur Miah, son of Rashid Miah of Atokura village in the upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar Police Station Md Abu Zafar said Mansur had an argument with her sister-in-law (brother’s wife) Shefa Begum on Saturday morning over the share of their homestead.

At one stage, Shefa informed her brother Ahammad Miah, also a resident of the village, of the matter over phone, he said. Soon, Ahmmad rushed in and swooped on Mansur and his brother Layes and stabbed them in the abdomen with a sharp weapon, leaving them injured.

Mansur was first taken to Sadar Hospital and then sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Sunday, the OC said.

Lightning strikes kill two

Two people including a woman were killed in two separate lightning incidents in Manirampur upazila on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Atiar Moral, 60, son of former UP member Amin Moral hailing from Kharinchi Uttarpara in the upazila, and Kalpana Akhter of Gangra village in the same upazila.

Atiar’s younger brother Matiar Mondal said Atiar died after being hit by the thunderbolt around 11:30am while taking cows home from nearby pasture.

In another incident in Gangra village, Kalpana was killed as a lightning struck her around 1pm while she was cutting grass at a cropland near her house.
