Biker killed in road accident

A motorcyclist was killed while another injured as a pick-up van hit their motorcycle on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Hemayetpur area on Sunday morning. The deceased was identified as Abul Hashem, hailing from Faridpur. Abul Kashem, sub-inspector of Savar Model Police Station, said the accident took place around 9 am when the pick-up van hit the motorcycle from the backside, leaving Hashem dead on the spot and rider Jabed Miah injured. Meanwhile, at least 20 passengers were injured after a bus plunged into a roadside ditch after its driver lost control over the wheel in Bypail area in the morning.

Abdul Mannan takes oath as PSC member

Former secretary Abdul Mannan yesterday took oath as a member of Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC). Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain administered the oath at Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge at a ceremony, which was conducted by Supreme Court Registrar General Dr Md Zakir Hossain. Appellate Division judges, PSC chairman Dr Mohammad Sadique, PSC members and other officials were present on the occasion, among others. The government on June 5 appointed Abdul Mannan as a member of Bangladesh Public Service Commission.

Roundtable held in Barishal

A day-long round table on role of journalists providing health care services to adolescent and youth health and transgender people was held yesterday at city hotel yesterday. The programme was organised by development organization Bandhu Social Welfare Society. Journalists from different print and electronic media participated. In the programme audio-visual presentations on key-notes were delivered by Fasiul Ahsan, advocacy director and Mashiur Rahman, senior programme officer of ‘Bandhu’. Among the participants Dr Nilima Das, journalists Murad Ahmed, Anisur Rahman Swapan, Akhtar Faruk Shahin, Kazi Miraz, Sushanta Ghosh, Swapan Khondokar, and Khan Rafik took part. The journalists agreed that media houses may open some potential doors of opportunities for the gender diverse population.

‘Yoga practice essential for mental fitness’

Regular yoga practice is of essence for both physical fitness and mental happiness coupled with generating self-confidence and courage among human beings. Yoga can also bring joy and peace in body and mind and its practice is very much significant to keep the body disease-free and workable. The views were expressed at a discussion at Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Rajshahi city yesterday afternoon. Assistant Indian High Commission Office in Rajshahi organized the discussion to mark the International Yoga Day- 2018.
