Cash, relief materials distributed among flood victims in Sylhet

SYLHET: The government has distributed a total of 1,686 metric tonnes of rice and Taka 18.57 lakh among the flood affected people in two districts of Sylhet region, reports BSS. According to the district administrations of Sylhet and Moulvibazar, a total of 251 metric tonnes of rice and Taka 3.80 lakh were distributed among flood victims in Sylhet district while 1,435 metric tonnes of rice and Taka 14.77 lakh in Moulvibazar district.

Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Numeri Zaman said adequate relief materials were sent to the upazila administrations of the district asking to distribute those among the flood victims.

If necessary, he said, the allocation of relief materials would be increased further.  “A total of 1,435 metric tonnes of rice and Taka 14.77 lakh have been allocated for the flood-hit people in Moulvibazar. Of the total allocation, we have already distributed 1,367 metric tonnes of rice and Taka 14.77 lakh among the flood affected people. The remaining 68 metric tonnes of rice will be distributed soon,” Deputy Commissioner of Moulvibazar Tofael Islam told BSS yesterday.

The overall flood situation in Moulvibazar district improved further as the water levels of the Manu and Dhalai rivers are in falling trend, he said.

However, the people have returned to their homes as the water receded from Moulvibazar municipality, Kulaura, Kamalganj, Rajnagar and Sadar upazila areas, the DC said. Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya visited the flood-hit areas and assured the flood victims of continuing relief operation for them until the flood situation is improved.

He asked the civil surgeons and upazila healthcare centres to keep medicine reserved to avert the outbreak of diseases after the flood there. Over 1.5 lakh and 2 lakh people were affected by flashflood triggered byh eavy rainfall in Sylhet and Moulvibazar districts this year.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) today predicted that the major rivers of the North-Eastern region – Surma and Kushiyara – may continue rising in next 24 hours and the existing flood situation in Sylhet district may slightly deteriorate.
