After taking an overnight pounding of 185mm of rains till 6am yesterday, the capital experienced a sudden hike in the heat quotient when the maximum temperature soared to 32.4 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. The country's highest temperature was recorded in Rajshahi city, which sizzled under a scorching sun and experienced 36C without any overnight rainfall.
The Met office recorded 35.9C in Ishurdi, followed by 35C in Naogaon and 33.8C in Rangpur. Bazlur Rashid, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office, told The Independent yesterday the heat would go away once the rains set in.
The Met Office expects heavy rains at different places in the next couple of days as the southwestern monsoon system has become active over the country.
On Saturday, torrential showers in Dhaka left many streets waterlogged. Many places inBasundhara, Mirpur, Dhanmondi, Mirpur Road, Elephant Road, Dhaka University and old Dhaka went under water. The dismal situation was due to clogging of underground drains with garbage, polythene bags, net bags and plastic products.
