‘Bangladesh to be closer to developed countries in 5yrs’
PABNA: Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon on Saturday said the country’s image will be closer to the developed countries if the present government stays in power in next five years.
“The progress of this government cannot be stopped…because the government is increasing its services in agriculture, information technology and social safety net,” the minister said while addressing the inaugural function of Pabna Sadar upazila’s Community Health and Heart Hospital here in the morning.
Focusing the government success in food production and power generation, Menon said the incumbent government should be in power for another five years.
He said the government is giving importance on the health sector while it has built many hospitals in the country’s remote areas to reach healthcare services at the doorsteps of marginal people. The Social Welfare Minister asked all to work together so that none can hinder the progress of the government. Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of the district, and local Awami League leaders also spoke on the occasion.
Special safety measures taken on Paturia-Daulatdia route
MANIKGANJ: The district administration in cooperation with the concerned departments have adopted special safety measures for passengers travelling on Paturia-Daulatdia ferry route for smooth returning to their working places after the Eid-ul-Fitr festival, reports BSS.
Local administration sources said the measures were taken today for a hassle-free transportation of vehicles carrying the passengers on the route.
And as a result, the sources said, the holidaymakers particularly those returning to the capital city after the Eid vacation are not facing any traffic jam.
Despite the festival coming to an end, the Manikganj district administration, district police and Fire Service and Civil Defence Department are continuing their services for safe movement of home coming and returning passengers on the route. The sources said since June 11 last the designated employees of the concerned departments have been providing round-the-clock services to the passengers, specially old or disabled ones, with heavy luggage to cross the route smoothly.
Brazil fan electrocuted while celebrating win in Sirajganj
Sirajganj: A supporter of Brazil football team electrocuted in Ullapara upazila on Friday night while celebrating his team’s win against Costa Rica in the ongoing FIFA world Cup 2018, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Mafizul Islam, 25, son of Amir Hossain of Hawrah village in the upazila.
Mofizul sustained injuries from electrocution around 11pm. Later, he succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment in the wee hours of the night at the upazila health complex.
Female ex-councilor held with yaba
Bagerhat: Police arrested a former female ward councilor of Morrelganj Municipality along with yaba pills from her house at East Sarail in the municipality on Saturday, reports UNB.
Arrestee Nasima Begum, 45, wife of Zahangir Alam of the same area was on bail in several drug related cases, said Md Rashedul Alam, officer-in-charge of Morelganj Police Station. A team of law enforcers conducted a drive at her house in guise of customers and detained her along with the contraband tablets.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Nasima’s husband fled the scene immediately.
The arrestee was produced before a court of Bagerhat Chief Judicial Magistrate in the afternoon, added the OC.
Construction of 2 sub-registry offices begins in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA: Construction of sub registrar offices at Gobindaganj and Shaghata upazila of the district began recently, reports BSS.
Sources concerned said Public Works Department (PWD) is implementing the work at a cost of Tk. 6 crore with fund from the government.
Twenty percent work on the project has already been completed and the rest would be finished by June next.
PDB Executive Engineer M. Arifuzzaman Khandkar said on completion of the project the working environment of the two offices will be improved to a great extent.
