The greenery and plantation on road dividers or borders are okay but even in people’s homes plants and trees are planned only to compliment the landscaping rather than to get fresh fruits in their season. There are hardly any fruit trees grown in urban homes now. Almost every home in the city with a garden in the 1970s and before that boasted mango, coconut and banana trees. But go to a house today with a nice and neat garden and you will find no such trees.
Bangladesh enjoys generally a sub-tropical monsoon climate congenial to growing a vast range of fruits. Most of these fruits perishable in nature are available in different seasons. There is no denying the fact that fruits are vital components of the daily diet and for meeting the demand for nutrition these should be included in every meal. There is a great environmental benefit in planting fruit trees. It is worrying to note that urban children are getting accustomed to fast foods. This is doing them more harm than good. They should be turned to fruit consumption. This will protect them from various diseases and will also reduce family budget on medicines. Diversified use of fruits should also be ensured.
There are fallow lands around houses of many farmers. Those can be brought under fruit cultivation. Even fruit cultivation can be taken up on the courtyards of dwelling houses. The initial investment for fruit cultivation is not that much. The vast youth force can be employed in this task. It can solve unemployment problem greatly. A family can earn a substantial amount of money by selling seasonal fruits after meeting its demand. Fruit trees can help protect environment, biodiversity, flora and fauna. Besides, those have timber value and can be used in making furniture and can be used for many other purposes. Trees aren’t just about clean air, although it is a vital function they perform for our existence. There is absolutely no other way to generate life-giving oxygen in the air other than trees and green cover.
Fruit processing plants can be set up in different places in the country. All concerned should put in their best effort to make the country green by increasing fruit trees area. The government, particularly the ministry and the department concerned, can provide necessary financial and logistic supports to the people willing to undertake fruit cultivation. Building of awareness can also bring the desired results.
