The Election Commission (EC) yesterday decided to deploy 57 observers for the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls to monitor and reports on the way the elections are held. The GCC polls are slated for June 26. Sources said the EC would deploy the observers to ensure free, fair and peaceful polling at each centre. The observers will be on duty for two days—on June 25 and on the day of the election. They will monitor how the elections are being held and accordingly report to the EC.
The observers include senior district election officers, district election officers, upazila district officers and thana-level election officers.
Besides, there will be two other officers who will act as the chief and deputy chief coordinator to monitor and coordinate the functions of the observers.
The observers will be briefed by the
commission at the EC Secretariat in the capital on June 24. They will report to the returning officers on the same day after the briefing.
The returning officers, in consultation with the chief coordinator, will assign observers in areas under their jurisdiction and send the details to the EC Secretariat. After being assigned their tasks, the observers will check on the night before the election whether the law enforcers and officers due to conduct the polls are fully prepared.
They will instantly inform the relevant returning officer or senior EC officials if they find any lapses or irregularities as per electoral laws. The irregularities include the snatching of ballot papers, deterioration of the law and order situation, preventing voters from entering the polling centres, the casting of fake votes, and efforts to illegally influence voters.
The observers will write their reports on designated forms within 24 hours after the completion of the election. They will mention in detail any striking incident that may have occurred during the polls in additional sheets for submission to the EC Secretariat and returning officers.
