Private launch owners and state-owned Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) yesterday started an 11-day special launch and steamer service from Dhaka-end for homebound passengers on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. Both private and public steamer owners will continue this service on the Dhaka-Barishal-Dhaka route till June 24.
The BIWTC will continue its Eid special service, along with six vessels up to Khulna as part of the regular service, will continue till July 24, said BIWTC deputy general manager (commercial/passenger) Sheikh Md Nasim.
The vessels scheduled for the Eid special service are: PS (peddle steamer) Ostrich, Mahsud, Turn, Lepcha, MV (motorised vessel) Modhumoti, Banglaee. The leave of all officials, staff and employees of the BIWTC’s operational sector has been cancelled to ensure hassle-free journey for the holidaymakers.
Saidur Rahman Rintu, vice-president of the Barishal Launch Owners' Association, said at least 23 triple-deck launches, including day trips by MV Green-Line and Adventure, will ply on the Barishal-Dhaka-Barishal route this year. In case of high pressure of passengers, the authorities will arrange double trips for the vessels from each end three days before and after Eid, he added.
The fares for a single-trip journey on the Barisal-Dhaka route would be be Tk.260–280 for the deck, Tk. 600-800 for per sofa seat, Tk. 1,100-1,200 for the single- seated cabin and Tk. 2,200-2,500 for the double-seated cabin. These will be in accordance wih the rates fixed by the government.
Besides, double-seated semi-VIP cabins would be available at Tk. 2,800-3,000 and VIP cabins at Tk. 6,000-10,000, depending on various facilities like the A/C, attached bath, and private spave.
Sources said six BIWTC vessels would be placed to carry passengers from Dhaka to their respective destinations connecting Chandpur, Barisal, Jhalakathi, Hularhut of Pirojpur, Morelganj of Bagerhut and Khulna river ports under this special schedule.
According to the announced schedule of the BIWTC, PS Mahsud and PS Lepcha will leave the Dhaka river port at 6pm and 7pm for Khulna and Morelganj respectively on June 13. Under this schedule, the BIWTC peddle steamer PS Ostrich will ply on June 14, 17, 20 from Dhaka-end; it will play on June 15 from Baro Machhua-end; and it will ply on June 19 and 22 from Barishal ends.
Moreover, MV Modhumoti will ply from Dhaka on June 15 and 21, from Morleganj on June 17, and from Barishal on June 23. MV Bangalee will ply from Dhaka on June 14 and 18; it will ply from Barishal on June 16 and 20. PS Lepcha will ply on June 21 from Dhaka, June 19 from Morelganj, and June 23 from Hularhut ends.
Further, PS Turn will ply from Dhaka on June 15 and 20, from Hularhat on June 18 and from Morleganj from June 22.
Under the same schedule, the BIWTC peddle steamer PS Mahsud will ply from Dhaka on June 16, 19 and 22; it will ply from Barishalon June 15, 18, 21; and it will ply from Morleganj on June 24.
Syed Abul Kalam Azad, assistant general manager in charge of the BIWTC Barishalstation, said BIWTC stations at Barishaland Narayanganj have been asked to provide special tug boats and piloting services.
They have also been instructed to remain prepared to face any emergency calls, he added.
The fare of BIWTC carriers would remain the same on special trips as on normal trips, the BIWTC official said.
Accordingly, the passengers on the vessels plying on the 169-km-long Dhaka-Barishal or the Barishal-Dhaka route for a single trip have to pay Tk. 1,050 for one first-class cabin seat, Tk. 630 for one second-class cabin (equivalent to first-class cabin of private launches) seat and Tk. 170 for each deck seat. These fares are, on average, 30-50 per cent less those charged private water transport operators on this route, said Syed Abul Kalam Azad.
Sea trucks of the BIWTC will connect 11 stations of coastal routes under Barishal, Bhola, Laxmipur, Noakhali and Chittagong districts.
Two coastal ships—MV Abdul Matin and MV Baro-Awlia—of the BIWTC will operate passenger services from Chittagong to connect different destinations under Hatiya and Sandwip from June 21 to July 1. BIWTC waterbus services will ply regularly from Sadarghat/Badamtali- Gabtali-Sadarghat and Narayanganj-Tongi-Narayanganj routes during the Eid vacation.
Additional ferry trips would also be activated on the Paturia-Daulatdia, Mawa-Keorakandi, Chandpur - Shariatpur, Bhola-Lakshmipur and Laharhat-Veduria river routes on occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, said BIWTC sources.
